560 Route de Darbonne )

I made 560 Route de Darbonne (2011) in Haiti while sitting on the porch of the orphanage where I was working. In Haiti, nobody sleeps at night, children, men and women walk, trade and search for modes of subsistence after sunset. In the dust of the Route of Darbonne, silhouettes appear at random in the light of a car headlamp. I wanted to capture this allegorical moment when people who are left behind by the stateless nation of Haiti become visible by fragments, in short instants before they again fade away and disappear in oblivion. Their bodies tell a story of vulnerability and resilience in a nation where the ruling class’s appetite for money leaves the people in the worst destitution.
